I just set up a Fairphone 5.
I had the issue that my Huawei from 2016 had ran out of software updates years and years ago. Due to that, I can't really use it as my work phone anymore for security reasons.
I searched for new phones that have a long software support to avoid the same issue in the future. Turns out, there are multiple models in the 600-700€ range that do have >=7 years of promised software support. I ended up having to choose between the Samsung Galaxy S24, Google Pixel 8 and the Fairphone 5.
S24 is much smaller, and I would have preferred the size, but in the end I decided to compromise and get the bigger FP5.
It really came down to thinking about the alignment of the company. Each company can promise things that sound similar, but which one actually shares my interests? I can't afford paying this much money to someone who will cheat to fullfill their promises in a way I won't be satisfied with in the end. I cannot know all the details that go into a modern smartphone and into maintaining its software and making spare parts available in the long term, so I need to get it from someone who I can trust to use their knowledge for good.
